The Mountain Railways of India

The Mountain Railways of India which including the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, and the Kalka-Shimla Railway, is recorded under UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the fact that these trains run at a moderate speed and can take up to eight hours to achieve their destinations, the mountain view is wonderful, making the adventures truly beneficial. It was built the mid nineteenth and twentieth century amid the British Raj to set up a compelling connection in the mountain areas.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: Darjeeling himalayan railway was the first to be built and run in India and still the most outstanding and speechless amongst others present in India. This railway line is also known as the “Toy Train” which is around 610 mm narrow gauge railway which runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. This railway track was laid and built between 1879 and 1881, which is about 78 kilometers long. This railway line is also listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was built by the British in 1908 in Tamil Naduis a railway. This railway still relies on its fleet of steam locomotives. In the month of july of 2005, this railway track was listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site. For the past years diesel engines have taken their control over the steam engines, but now also the tourist and local mens are asking for the steam locomotives. The famous Hindi song “Chaiyya Chaiyya” from the film “Dil Se” featuring Shahrukh Khan was shot on the roof top of NMR.

The Kalka–Shimla Railway: The Kalka–Shimla Railway is 762 mm narrow track railway line in North-West India. It is famously known for its mountain railway tracks and the facsinating and breathtaking views of the hills and surrounding villages and locations. Later in 2007, the team of UNESCO World Heritage Site came to India to explore this magical mountain railway. After visiting and exploring this wonderful railway line UNESCO added Kalka-Shimla Mountain railway in their World Heritage Site list.
