Eravikulam National Park


Eravikulam National Park is located along the Western Ghats in Idduki district of Kerala in India. The Park is spread over an area of 97 square kilometers. The national park is the first National Park in Kerala. It is the ideal habitat of the endemic Nilgiri Tahr, Nigiritragus hylocrius. The national park is managed and administrated by the Kerala Department of Forest and Wildlife, Munnar.


Eravikulam National Park was managed as a Game Reserve by the Kannan Devan Hill Produce Company till 1971. The responsibility of the management and protection of the area was done by a pioneer Non Governmental organization in this area, which was formed in 1928. Due to the unique land features, climate and remoteness, this high land gain the attention of many hunters, naturalists, and scientists. In 1975 Eravikulam was declared as a wildlife sanctuary and then in 1978 it was given the status of a National park. The main motive behind this was to protect the rare Nilgiri Tahr and Hemitragus Hylocrious, which are common here. But now the park is home to numerous protected species of flora and fauna.


Eravikulam National Park is densely populated with a number of trees and shrubs. Three major types of plant communities are found in the Park – grasslands, shrublands and forests. The grassland which is found at this park is called the climax grasslands. A trip to the outskirts of this Park will let you learn a lot about the bio diverse nature of this national park. The deeper valleys are extensively forested.


At Eravikulam you will find as many as 26 species of mammals. The most prominent of all are Nilgiri Tahr, Elephants, Langur, Marten, Small-clawes Otter, Tigers and Leopards. A visitor can spot a number of these animals dwelling in the forest. Apart from these animals, Varai Aadu or the mountain goat, which is an endangered species, can also be seen wandering inside this park.

Best time to visit:

Eravikulam National Park is open throughout the year. September to February is the best time to visit the park.

Getting There:

Air: Cochin is the nearest airport which is located at a distance of 135km from here. Private coaches and buses can be hired from Cochin to reach Eravikulam.

Rail: Munnar is the nearest railhead town from Eravikulam, located at a distance of 13km from here. You can reach Eravikulam from Munnar by hiring a coach or a cab.

Road: Private coaches and cabs are available on hire to reach Eravikulam from different parts of Kerala.
