Harike Wildlife Sanctuary


Harike Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the convergence of the rivers Sutlej and Beas. The sanctuary is ideally located on the border of Ferozepur and Amritsar. Harike Wildlife sanctuary is also known as Hari-ke-Pattan and is a perfect place for Bird lovers. The Sanctuary is spread over an area of 86 square kilometers.


In 1999, the area was declared as a Wild Life Sanctuary and because of its importance as a wetland of international stature, it was declared a Ramsar site by the International Body of Wetlands under the UNDP in 1990.


The sanctuary consists of a rich variety of flora and is surrounded by species like Amaltas, Puthkanda, Khajoor, Kahi, Elephant Grass, Drek, Bel, Bahera, Kachnar, Nara, Kala Siris, Gandhela, and Water Hyacinth.


Avifauna in the area include the White-rumped Vulture, Indian Skimmer, Eurasian Sparrow hawk, Horned Grebe, Eurasian Hobby, Black-necked Grebe, Common Wood shrike, Brown Shrike, White-tailed Stonechat, Rufous-vented Prinia, White-crowned Penduline Tit, Striated Grass bird, Sulphur-bellied Warbler and the Cetti’s Bush Warbler. Animals dominantly seen in the sanctuary are Jungle cat, Indian wild Boar, Mongoose, Smooth Indian Otter and Jackal.

Best time to visit:

Harike Wildlife Sanctuary is open throughout the year. Best time to visit the park is during the months of November to March. Summer and monsoon months are not recommended for visiting the sanctuary because of the extreme hot weather during the summers and the heavy rainfall in the monsoon season.

Getting There:

By Air: Nearest airport is in Amritsar.

By Rail: Amritsar has the nearest railway station to reach Harike Lake Wildlife Sanctuary.

By Road: Placed at a distance of 60 kilometres from Harike and 104 kilometres from Ludhiana which is well connected by road through Moga.
