Keoladeo National Park


Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park is located near Bharatpur and in between two of India’s most historic cities, Agra and Jaipur, Rajasthan.  This park has a rich variety of unique Birds. It is a paradise for Bird lovers. The Park is spread over an area of 29 square kilometers of land.


Keoladeo National Park formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary and is famous as one of Asia’s finest birding areas. Earlier, the Park was a hunting area for the Maharaja Suraj Mull of Bharatpur for Duck shooting. After then hunting was banned by the Government. Later, it was declared a protected sanctuary in 1971. It is also a declared World Heritage Site. The park derives its name from the temple of Keoladeo (Shiva) and ‘ghana’ which locally means dense, implying the nature of the vegetation.


Keoladeo Ghana National Park consists of a grassland, woodland, woodland swamps, and wetlands. and different varieties of trees, shrubs and plants. Maximum area of the Park is covered with shrubs and medium sized tress. Every year thousands of migratory waterfowl visit the park for wintering breeding etc. This National park consists of 379 species of flowering plants.


It is also an excellent place to watch mammals like Golden Jackal, Striped Hyaena, Fishing Cat, Jungle Cat, Nilgai, Sambar, Blackbuck and wild Boar.

Best time to visit:

Keoladeo National Park is open throughout the year. Best time to visit the park is during the months of November to March.

Getting There:

By Air: Agra, 54 km. away is connected to all major cities.

By Rail: Bharatpur lies on the Mumbai-Delhi sector of Western Railway. The Fatehpur Janta Express leaves New Delhi at 2 p.m. and arrives at Bharatpur station at 6.15 p.m. It departs from Bharatpur at 8 a.m. reaching Delhi by 12.30 p.m.

By Road: Agra is 54 km. away. There are regular buses to Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur and Deeg. Other options include Alwar 117 km., Deeg 32 km., Delhi 182 km., Fatehpur Sikri 22 km., Jaipur 174 km., Mathura 36 km. and Sariska 130 km.
