Mount Harriet National Park

Introduction:

The Mount Harriet National park is a national park located in Ferrargunj tehsil in Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory of India and one of the closest wilderness areas to the Capital port Blair. Mount Harriet is the third highest peak in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. Mount Harriet National Park spread over an area of 46.62 sq km and also serves as a best picnic spots for the britishers.

History:

Mount Harriet got its name from the name of Robert Christopher Tytler’s wife. Robert Christopher was the soldier in the British forces and was appointed as officiating Superintendent of the Convict Settlement in the Port Blair region. Mount Harriet National Park established in 1979.

Flora:

Mount Harriet National Park is the most favorite tourist spot for nature lovers. The park supports all major forest types found in the Andaman namely Evergreen Forest, Andaman Semi-evergreen Forests, Andaman Moist Deciduous Forests and Littoral Forests. This park has around 393 variety of plants out of which 74 are endemic.

Fauna:

The richness of wildlife is found in Mount Harriet National Park. This Park is known for its wild pig, saltwater crocodile, robber crab and turtles.

Activities:

Activities like trekking, photography can be done here. For Britishers, it is a famous picnic spot.

Best time to visit:

Best time to visit the park is during the months of January to March.

Timings:

Visitors are advised to get in touch with officials of the sanctuary for complete information entry timings and fee. Usually this Park remains open from 07:00 am to 045:00 pm.

Getting There:

The park is accessible from port blair via Bombooflot. Ferry service are also available to reach there. The ferry service from chatham and phoenix bay jetties take about 15 and 20 minutes respectively. The road link is via sippighat and chouldhari and it takes about an hour to cover approximately 40 km distance.
