Orang National Park


Orang National Park is located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River in the Darrang and Sonitpur district of Assam, India. Orang National Park is also known as Mini Kaziranga National park.The Park is spread over an area of 78.81 square kilometers. Orang National Park in Assam is famous for its natural scenic beauty that captivates the tourists from all over the world.  The park on the whole is a flat land and the terrain is gentle slope from north to south.


British Government declared Orang as a Game Reserve in 1915 and later declared as a Sanctuary in 1985 to protect wildlife. Later the Assam state forest department considered orang game reserve for Project Tiger. In 1992, this park was renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary which was reversed due to public pressure against renaming. Finally, the sanctuary was upgraded to Orang National Park on 13th April 1999 to protect different endangered and critically endangered species of wild animals and birds in India.


Orang National park has similar vegetation as that of Kaziranga National Park and thus it is known as Mini Kaziranga National Park.  The natural forest species are like Bombax ceiba, Dalbergia sisoo, Sterculia villosa, Trewia nudiflora, Zizypphus jujuba, Litsaea polyantha, etc are found here.


The Orang National Park is home to One horned Rhinoceros, Royal Bengal Tiger, Barking Deer, Elephant, Leopard, Sambar and Hogdeer, Pangolin, Civet Cat & Otter.

Best time to visit:

Orang National Park is open throughout the year. Best time to visit the park is during the months of November to March.

Getting There:

By Air: Nearest airport is Tezpur Airport which is approximately 70 km (43.49 miles) away

By Rail: Nearest Railway Station is Rangapara North Railway Station, which is approximately 70 km (43.49 miles) away.

By Road: Bus services are available from all places in Assam. Orang Bus Stand is approximately 20 km (12.42 miles) away from the sanctuary.
