Sultanpur National Park


Sulatnpur National Park and Bird Sanctuary is located in Sultanpur town of Gurgaon District in Haryana.  Sultanpur National Park is a bird paradise for bird watcher. During summer and monsoon months the park is inhabited by many local bird species. A total of around 250 bird species have been reported in the park. The Park is spread over an area of 1.43 square kilometers.


The area Sultanpur was named after the descendant of Harsh Dev Chauhan, Sultan Singh who occupied maximum villages through his chivalry acts where this land was the biggest in area and proved to be the most trading place especially for the salt production in the area during the colonial era.But apart from the political history, the area as a sanctuary was first noticed by an ornithologist and Honorary Secretary of Delhi Bird Watching Society, Mr. Peter Jackson. He wrote a letter to the prime minister of India Indira Gandhi in 1970 and demanded the need to declare the area as a bird sanctuary. Followed by the letter, the prime minister instructed the chief minister of Haryana to protect the area of Sultanpur Lake and then in the year 1972, the Sultanpur Bird Reserve was established and then twenty years later, the area was upgraded as national park in 1989.

Flora and Fauna:

Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is a home for nearly 150 varieties of resident bird species and a stopover for nearly 100 varieties of migratory bird species of Siberia, Europe and Afghanistan nations. Birdwatchers and Ornithologist can have a fabulous and spectacular view of migratory birds and resident birds from machans, watch towers constructed at different locations.

Best time to visit:

Sultanpur National Park and Bird Sanctuary is open throughout the year. Best time to visit the park is during the months of December to January.


Visitors are advised to get in touch with officials of the sanctuary for complete information entry timings and fee. Usually the Park remains open from 09:00 AM to 04:30 PM.

Getting There:

By Air: 45 kms away in Delhi at IGI Airport, the tourists can de-board themselves to reach the sanctuary within 20 minutes.

By Rail: The New Delhi Railway Station is the nearest station for the ornithologists to catch the tremendous species of avi-faunas.

By Road: The Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is well connected by roads and distances with various cities can be calculated as follows: Gurgaon (15 km), Faridabad (60 km) and Delhi (50 km).
