Valmiki National Park


Valmiki National Park is located in West Champaran district of Bihar, India. The reserve spreads over an area of 880 square kilometers. It is the only Tiger Reserve in Bihar. The Valmiki Tiger Reserve comprises of the Valmiki National Park and the Valmiki Wild Sanctuary. It is the 18th tiger reserve in the country and with 10 Tigers ranks fourth in terms of tiger population.


The National Park gets its name from Valmiki Nagar, a small town located within the forest area. Initially a part of the forest was declared as a reserve forest in 1978 with an total area of 464 square kilometers. Later, in 1989, the national park and wildlife sanctuary were added to the area of the reserve and in 1990 the total area of the reserve was increased to the existing 880 sq km area.


The park consists of moist Sal bearing forests, dry Sal bearing forests, moist mixed deciduous forests without Sal, cane and tropical seasonal swamp forests containing reed beds and wet grasslands.


Valmiki National Park is famous for Tiger, Rhinoceros, Black bear, Leopard, Wild dog,Leopard cat, Wild cat, Python and King Cobra. The main attraction of Valmiki Tiger Reserve  is the Royal Bengal tiger and most visitors arrive mainly to catch a glimpse of this elusive and endangered animal.


Valmiki National Park is popular for the activities like trekking and Bird watching.

Best time to visit:

Valmiki National Park is open throughout the year. Best time to visit the park is during the months of February to May and September to December.


Visitors are advised to get in touch with officials of the sanctuary for complete information entry timings and fee.

Getting There:

By Air: Airport is Gorakhpur is the nearest one but (IATA: GOP, ICAO: VEGK), however it has infrequent commercial Flights.

By Road: Valmiki National Park is one of the well-known parks located in Western park of Champaran district in Bihar state and is connected by Road to all the major cities of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

By Rail: Valmiki Nagar is the nearest railway station and it is connected to places like Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi and Kolkata. Other major Railway Stations in vicinity are Muzaffarpur (200km) and Gorakhpur (125 km) are away from Valmiki National Park.
