Jaisalmer Fort

This fort is also known as the Golden Fort. Its beauty is at its best when the sun sets. Its yellow shade turns to honey-gold. The architecture is royal and unique. Jaisalmer Government Museum

It was opened in 1984 by the Department of Archaeology and Museums. It is near Moomal Hotel. The purpose of the establishment was to exhibit the cultural heritage of the monuments of the Thar Desert. It is full of paintings. Inscriptions, coins, handicrafts, stone statues and embroidered dresses. It also has a collection of fossils of wood, young insects, vertebrate and invertebrate animals, limestone, sandstone, etc giving a view of the geological history. Nathmal Ji KI Haweli

There are havelis in the culture of India. Since there was a tradition of joint families, all the family members used to live in one house called Haweli. These naturally came from our ancestors. These are mansions. The hawelis in Jaisalmer are made up of sandstone with ostentatious carvings on walls, balconies, archways, etc. Nathmal Ji Ki Haweli is known for its irregular shape. It was built by 2 brothers who started making it differently without consulting each other from different facets and then joined it. Salim Singh Ji Ki Haweli

This haweli has a high arched roof. There are carved brackets to support the roof and the brackets are of the shape of peacocks. There are also iron rods and no cement. There is a popular story that there were 2 wooden storeys to make it equivalent to the Maharaja’s Palace in height. But the king understood the intention or didn’t like the magnificence of it and ordered to demolish it. There are 38 balconies. Patwon Ki Haweli

It is the largest in size. There are 5 hawelis in total. The first Haweli is the Kothari Patwa Haweli. It is the biggest out of the four and the most luxurious. The Patwa Haweli was made by Guman Chand Patwa. He was a famous trader and he built 5 storeys for his five sons. There are wall paintings, windows with yellow sandstone carvings, gateways, mirror artwork and archways. This Haweli is also made up of yellow sandstone. However, the main gateway is brown in colour. The haweli is also called the ‘Mansion of Brocade Merchants’. The trader and his family had a business of golden and silver threads used in dresses while embroidery. Mandir Palace

It was founded by Maharawal Mooralji. Its construction was inspired by the building of temples of Lord Ram and Girdharji around it. Additions in constructions kept taking place generations by generations. The most attractive spot in the palace is ‘Jawahir Vilas’. It is known for intricate stone structures. influence of Islam is seen because of caravans from Afghanistan and Persia. The grandson of Maharawal Jawahir Singh JI is the owner of this palace. Jain Temples of Jaisalmer

These Jain Temples are inside the Jaisalmer Fort itself. There are 7 in number. On Jaisalmer Travel Package, you will get to know the foundation of its greatness. It was a monument which speaks of the victory of Indo Pakistani War of 1971. It included battle of Laungewala on 4th December 1971. It is so proud to know as an Indian that only about 100 soldiers could manage to put a halt to 2000 attacking soldiers along with their 60 tanks. This war memorial was constructed to celebrate the victory.

Vyas Chhatri

It is in Bada Bagh. There is mention of small complex houses or cenotaphs in Bada Bagh also. This one refers to Ved Vyas, the sage who wrote Mahabharat, the epic. This is also made up of yellow sandstone and there are commendable examples of architecture.
